I am not exactly a wizard with Windoze so please forgive this question if it turns out to be some stupid operator error!
I finally decided to bite the bullet and upgrade my gSender installation (was 1.5.3 I think).
I renamed the gSender program directory to gSender 1.5.3
I made a new directory gSender 1.6
I copied the file gSender-1.6.0-Windows-64Bit.exe to the gSender 1.6 directory and ran it. After confirming that yes, I really wanted to run this exe and opting for a desktop shortcut to be installed, the system suggested a default installation directory … I proceeded.
Once installed, it started gSender (I still have whiplash from the startup) … all good so far.
I closed gSender and attempted to start it via the desktop shortcut that was installed by the setup program. This brings us to the error message:
Server Startup Error
gSender encountered an unexpected error while starting
Unexpected token ’
I restarted the gControl computer and tried again … no dice, same error.
Sooooo, any clue anybody? Did I install the correct gSender version from the pile of available installation files?
While I am asking stupid questions - how do I transfer any sort of setup from the old version of gSender to the new version?
p.s. not sure why you renamed the previous version directory. The upgrade would have overwritten what it needed to and kept all your previous settings.
Belt and suspender approach - if I should f up the install I could always go back to the old version (which I might have to do)
Good suggestion! … but alas, no.
I deleted the entire gSender directory that was created by the install. ll re-installed from the original installation file. Remember that this ran the first time … now it doesn’t. Same error when the installation tries to run the new version of gSender.
This is without using the shortcut - ie direct from the gSender directory
Does gSender install anything in any directory other than in the gSender directory in the program files folder?
While renaming the gSender directory for backup purposes seemed like a good idea, it turns out it wasn’t. I deleted the gSender directory that had the 1.6 install in it, renamed the old installation back to ‘gSender’ with the hopes of having everything going again like before I started the whole upgrade thing. That installation does not give the error encountered with the 1.6.0 installation but it also does not proceed past the ‘gSender’ logo splash screen.
Soooo … goody goody … I am dead in the water …
The only thing I can think of is that there is a file somewhere that is not in the gSender application directory.
OK, got it figured out. gSender sticks a bunch of stuff into the /users/Sienci/ directory which of course I neglected to back up.
Removing the ‘.sender.rc’ file and letting gSender recreate it was the magic fix.
