Machine Y axis noises

Now that I’m getting used to this thing running, I have a question about noises coming from axes movement.

I’m noticing that my Y travel is loud compared to my X and Z movements, and I’m wondering if that’s common?

I assumed that all axes would be as quiet as each other, but my Y screws are making a ‘clicking noise’ on both sides as it moves and makes the table shake a little.

I have tried trading out brackets on different corners as I’ve read in the documentation but that does nothing, so I’m just curious if I’m making something of nothing.

Thanks

Edit: link to an mp4 video of the offending noises:

@Crazy8sCommando I’ve moved your question to where I believe that it will get more exposure.

While waiting for replies, you may want to search on “axis clicking”. There are a few threads dealing with this issue.

@Crazy8sCommando Might be an alignment issue. Take a look at this document: Noisy Ball Screw – Sienci Labs

Thanks Chucky, that’s the documentation that I was referring to. I tried loosening the screws and running it to the back and tightening, and that’s where I got the idea to switch end plates on the Y sides.

I’ll do some forum research and see if I can find anything.

@Crazy8sCommando Also make sure the motors are seated properly. One user reported they didn’t sit tight against the plate and it was because the shaft didn’t engage fully inside the coupler. The red bushing was too tight and preventing proper insertion.

I had a Y axis making a sort of odd sound but only at certain speeds, I finally really dug in after a few rounds of trying to make sure everything was tight and I noticed that on one side the coupler to the motor had separated a fair amount compared to all the other couplers, when I took the motor off the red urethane bushing in the middle came out, so I put the bushing backtogether, and re-installed everything being careful again to snug up both screws and it went away, so maybe look closely at those?

Here is that thread about the motor not mounting flush if you want to verify that with direct link to video of what mine was doing. Never tried running it like that until I fixed it since I knew it wasn’t right.

It’s worth a shot. If you just assembled your CNC and if you followed the installation video, they tell you to use the wrong sized screws to attach the gantry to the ball screw carriage. Check the four screws on each side, if they’re 20mm, they should be 16mm. Sounds crazy but that fixed my similar issue to yours.
