Sudden alarm 14 upon any activation of spindle

Fortunately after I set up ethernet yesterday, it seems to stay connected after alarm 14 and im able to jog after clearing the alarm. I did a full reset of the slb again today, reinstalled gsender fresh, full power cycle (pc too just cuz why not?), ran the spindle setup code, full power cycle again, verified changes to firmware and still same issue.

I also believe at this point that its either the board, spindle, or VFD. I sent a fresh diag file to sienci today with more photos covering EVERYTHING. I’m very optimistic they can sort it out. Covered all the dumb user error possibilities as far as I know.

Again thank you for your help

I’m having the exact same issue. Throws the error within milliseconds. No problem with jogging though

@PressureMade You might want to start your own thread and reference this one. It could get confusing otherwise.

@Afterlife It could also be a cable issue. You can now rule out USB since you’re connected via ethernet, but there is also the spindle cable. Switched wires and bent pins have occured in other cables in the past. But you had it working for one day, so I’m not sure that would be the problem.

Yes, I unplugged and inspected all contacts and wires. Everything looks great, but I’ll test continuity tomorrow to rule it out

My jogging issue was resolved after switching to ethernet, but ill update you with whatever solutions I may get

Are you sure your machine is grounded well? In the winter here, I have to be careful with static buildup and take extra precautions to make sure my dust collection is grounded well. Copper throughout the main tubes and ensuring everything metal is grounded out. Just a thought. Probably not the answer but worth looking.

What spindle do u have in had the same problem with pwn spindle check ur settings in the vfd

I have the h-100. Settings are spot on in VFD. Operation is perfect in manual mode. Screen reads r00.0 in automatic after “handshake” should happen.

I personally believe its an issue with the rs485 transceiver on the SLB-EXT OR the cable itself obstructing coms with SLB.

I see on the screen that you are not connected. I use a USB “A” to USB “C” cable. Connected to an intel MAC. there is a limit to the length for the cable of 10 to 12 feet. It doesn’t send you any errors or indicate you are disconnected, you just lose signal and the CNC runs incorrectly. I get the alarm 14 when I initially power up the machine. After you connect to the controller It usually takes 3 presses of the reset Botton followed by doing home on gSender to get things going.

I was using the supplied USB cable. Im using ethernet now and it doesnt disconnect. My computer is nested under the spoil board so didnt need any long cables, fortunately.

Sienci thinks my control board is faulty and sent me a new one. Hopefully that cures the main issue of the spindle communication.

Something else im going to investigate is what @PressureMade found on his, which was a defect in his spindle wires at the plug. Since both of us just recieved and got ours set up, I feel there is a chance that its a batch issue?

The new control board SHOULD show up tomorrow. I will report back with updates

There was an issue with another cable a while back. I forget the details but a couple of users reported that one of the cables had a orange and brown (I think) wire reversed on the connector. They happened around the same time so it could have been a bad batch. It is possible that the same could happen with the spindle cable.

Update:

New controller came in today. So far, flawless functionality. I think its safe to say it was the rs485 transceiver. Thank you everyone who chimed in. Hopefully my next post wont be troubleshooting an issue!

Edit: Weird thing. Ive made 15 replies in this forum, but this very last one had to be approved by admin.

@Afterlife It’s not weird, Scott. Key words in posts trigger action by a mod or the administrator before the post can go live. As with everything else in life, nothing is perfect. So, sometimes perfectly acceptable posts get flagged. I saw the flag and approved the post. IMHO, the system worked.

2025 was a year with multiple massive spam attacks. There were automatic spam capture features put in place to help make it difficult for the spammers to get posts into the forum. You probably triggered one of the spamtraps accidentaly and your post got put into review map.

No worries, happens to me too. It’s not a personal thing. Maybe a long word or you posted faster than your shadow… who knows.

Hmm, maybe i should contact Sienci too. Glad it took care of your problem.

Ahhh, I see. I missed the spam attack era. Greatful there is a system in place for that. I was going over all my comments to see if I broke a rule or something. Im too new to CNC to lose community support!
