Vortex rotary axis

Had my vortex up and running kind of. At least I turned square stock to round stock. My situation is ; now when I connect the vortex splitter cable to the SLB, the SLB shuts down. Power works fine running the Altmill without the splitter connected. Stumped…

Hi Keith,

I don’t hava an Altmill, SLB, Vortex so I prolly should stay away from this here topic, but.. I like to learn so when a to0ic like this come around, I still like to look into the subject, just to learn a thing or two.

What has me stumped here, is that you mention a splitter cable. I looked at the installing video on the Vortex manual page, and it mentions the use of this splitter page specificly for the Longmill. Are you sure you need that splitter cable?

To be clear, I don’t think it matters much, it wont break things using the splitter, but reducing components when having problems is one way to possibly get rid of them. If your problem persists when plugging the power plug directly into the slb without splitter, eliminates the splitter as being the problem, leaving you with the wiring on, and the vortex as the thing to focus on.

May I ask, when your SLB shuts down, can you discribe that?

Altmill SLB Vortex set up use a splitter cable.

Followed the assembly instructions and had it running for a while. Put it away for some flat carving and watch tutorials on the vortex.

  1. Connected splitter as instructed.
  2. No power indication on SLB while splitter cable is connected to the rotary.
  3. Disconnected the rotary from the splitter and power is resumed.
  4. There is a gremlin in there lol

Yes, but.. you have the SLB-ext and the instructions are different for that one.
Eg without splitter but directly on the controller.

Not that it matters much for you demonstrated that the problem is not in the splitter.

I would disconnect the cables from the vortex unit and see if the slb still triggers into shutting down when you connect the power.

For the rest, I am too ill equiped to dive deeper into your problem. I do 't even know if connecting the vortex needs to be done with an slb powered off or on.

I hope someone better equiped comes in and is more able to help.

Fotos loaded in reverse order. Thanks for the help

Great suggestion on unplugging the vortex. Splitter cable is fine. Once I pushed the power plug into the vortex stepper the board shut down. Good isolation troubleshooting. I’ll swap the motor with the Z motor and see if it follows. Whew….thanks

Swapped the motors around and isolated the problem to the vortex stepper motor.
Opening a ticket now….Thank you
